Have you ever seen a colorado sunset?

alla1:

last summer I was a summer camp counselor, and it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I’d never socially fit in as well with any group of people before I got to camp, and that feeling of belonging is something i’ll treasure forever. BUT… it wasn’t a resume-building experience, and other than developing parenting skills and learning more about my religion, i didn’t learn ANYTHING that could be used in the real world…

so now i’m working at a desk job… in DC… going to seminars think tanks at least once a week, researching, learning, attending classes with foreign service officers… but it sucks so much more. I’m getting all these seemingly-worthwhile things out of the experience, but a part of me really just wants to organize a color war, or lead a camping trip, or go mountain biking…

can you ever really have both? have that much fun and get as much out of the experience?

I am still holding out hope that you can do both. There is always the option of changing majors to something more wonderful. For example: my brother majored in Leisure Service Management. He can do any number of things from event planning at resorts and cruise lines - to working at and/or owning a summer camp for kids. His ultimate goal is to open a camp for inner-city kids where they can go and experience the outdoors (everyone should see the sunrise/sunset over the mountains, and see the whole sky filled with stars) but make it free for the kids by aquiring sponsorship from corporations to pay for the kids’ stay. There are always things you can change, but don’t stick with something you’re not sure about. It’s your future and you should make the most of it. It’s really all we’ve got.
